Application Lifecycle Management is the glue that ties all these roles and the activities they perform together. Let s take a look at four ways of looking at ALM (see Figure 2-2). I have chosen these four because I have seen this separation in so many of the organizations I have worked with or spoken to: Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) view: This is perhaps the most common way of looking at ALM because development has owned this question for a long time. This could very well be an effect of the gap between the business side and the IT side in most organizations, and IT has taken the lead on this. Service management or operations view: Operations have also had (in my experience) an unfortunate separation from IT development. This has resulted in them having their own view of ALM and the problems in this area. Application Portfolio Management (APM) view: Again maybe because of the gap between business and IT, I have seen many organizations with a portfolio ALM strategy in which IT development is only one small part. From a business view, the focus has been on how to handle the portfolio itself and not on the whole ALM process. Chief information officer (CIO) view (or the unified view): Fortunately, some organizations focus on the whole ALM process by including all three of the preceding views. This is the only way to take control over, and optimize, ALM. For a CIO, it is essential to have this view all the time; otherwise, development activities can easily get out of hand.

How to use BC.NetBarcodeGenerator.Gs1128 library to create GS1-128/EAN-128 barcodes in .NET Windows Forms, ASP.NET Web Forms, and IIS applications.

These items can be addressed by using Microsoft s predefined best practice policies The following best practice policies apply to these checks: Database Auto Close: This policy checks that autoclose is not enabled on any databases Having a database with autoclose enabled can cause significant performance issues due to the resources consumed by opening and closing the database after each connection Database Auto Shrink: This policy checks that autoshrink is not enabled on any databases Having a database with autoshrink enabled can cause significant performance issues due to the physical fragmentation that is the result of the autoshrink process Last Successful Backup Date: This policy checks whether all the databases have had a successful full backup within the time frame defined by the Safe Last Backup Date condition (the default value is within the last 24 hours).

@Rolledback(true) will make a transaction roll back after the execution of a test method. If the argument is false, the transaction will be committed. This annotation overrides the class default rollback strategy. You can now mark some test methods to be rolled back and some to commit, without having to call the setComplete() method, making the code easier to read (see Listing 21-24). Listing 21-24. @Rollback Example @Rollback(false) public void testPopulateDatabase(){ //test code that populates the database, and needs to be committed }

The @NotTransactional annotation has no arguments and, when present, marks the test method as not transactional. The method will not run in a transactional context. See Listing 21-25 for a simple usage example. Listing 21-25. @NotTransactional Example @NotTransactional public void testSomeNonTransactionaTest(){ //this test code will not run in the transactional context }

Let s take a look at ALM from an SDLC perspective first. In Figure 2-3, you can see the different phases of a typical development project. Keep in mind that this is just a simplified view for the sake of this discussion. I have also tried to fit in some of the different roles from the ALM process presented earlier.

The @ExpectedException annotation indicates that the test method is expected to throw an exception; the expected exception class is passed as a parameter. Using this annotation, you can write much more elegant tests to determine if an exception was thrown correctly from your code. Listing 21-26 shows the usual way to test the exception behavior, which we used in previous examples (the testRegisterIncorrectPassword() method from DefaultUserServiceIntegrationTest). Listing 21-26. Traditional Exception Expected Test public void testRegisterIncorrectPassword() throws Exception{ User user3= new User(); user3.setUsername("jandD"); user3.setPassword("fgh85");

try{ userService.register(user3); fail("Password must be at least 6 characters long!"); }catch(IllegalArgumentException ex){ //OK } } If the userService.save() method throws an exception, everything is OK. If not, the test should fail (by explicitly calling the fail() method). Now, take a look at Listing 21-27, the refactored testRegisterIncorrectPassword() method using the @ExceptionExpected annotation. Listing 21-27. @ExceptionExpected Example @ExpectedException(IllegalArgumentException.class) public void testRegisterIncorrectPassword() throws Exception{ User user3= new User(); user3.setUsername("jandD"); user3.setPassword("fgh85"); userService.register(user3); }
